He walks down the street, or in a parking lot, and casually tries to open each car door in an attempt to burglarize the vehicle of your possessions. How many of us have left our wallets or purses in the car and thought nothing of it? This combined with an unlocked vehicle is a criminals ideal situation. Most petty thieves simply want to open the door to an unlocked car and make away with some valuable contents (GPS, Radio Receiver, Wallet, Purse, Cell Phone) as quickly as possible. So whats the easiest thing we can do to avoid being a victim of Automobile Burglary? Below is a list of basic tips everyone should follow that will help you avoid being a criminals target.

  • Lock your car doors and roll up the windows
  • Never leave your valuables inside of your car, especially in plain site
  • Avoid storing valuable electronics in your car, if you must, remove them from plain site
  • Park your car in a well lit place, viewable from your home if possible

Try to follow these basic precautions even if you are parking your car in your own driveway for a few minutes while you grab something you forgot from your house. Sometimes a brief visit or stop can turn into a few hours that your car and valuables are left unattended. Its all too easy for us to neglect to lock the car doors and roll up the windows when we feel we have parked in a safe location, however this is just the opportunity a criminal is waiting for.
